A New Off Policy Care Request Order is now available for unit Charge nurses to place that will be useful in delineating off policy (ex: meds in formula) versus “ICU Therapy in Acute Care Setting”. The order will trigger a new icon to display on the RISK Dashboard for patients that are being cared for on Acute Care, who need ICU Therapy. Additional work has been done to update the Algorithm within the Escalation Protocol for Patient Care, Safety Concerns, or Off Policy Request.
Overview of the algorithm changes includes:
- Prior to an off policy for “ICU Therapy in Acute Care Setting” being recommended the ICU charge nurse verifies there is no ICU bed/staff available for patient transfer to ICU
- Bedside RN verifies RISK RN presence at time of decision of Off Policy request or communicates directly with RISK RN if not present (ie. Rounds or Transfers).
- RISK RN & ICU Provider work with Acute Care team to establish escalation criteria
Review the Escalation Protocol for Patient Care, Safety Concerns, or Off-Policy Requests for more information on practice changes.
